You have entered a web based GIS that uses SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) to generate maps. Eyes on the Forest (EoF) provides this information so readers

  1. can visualize forest loss in Sumatra’s Riau Province since 1982,
  2. can identify protected areas in Riau,
  3. can identify the companies whose operations have replaced Riau’s forests,
  4. can identify the companies who hold licenses to convert additional forest,.
  5. can show distribution of elephants and their conflict with humans in relation to forest cover in Riau,
  6. can identify the companies whose operations have Forest fire on their conccessions.
  • You will need Internet Explorer version 6+.
  • Download the Adobe SVGViewer plug-in to display the maps.
  • The fewer toolbars you load with your browser the larger your view of the maps will be.
  • You can generate pop-ups with additional information. To do so you will have to disable pop-up protection.
  • To view the information choose either of four options:
    • Forests (fast)” is a set of GIS layers on the status of forests and its users without a satellite image composite as background.
    • Forests (full)” includes a satellite image composite.
    • Elephants” includes approximate locations of elephant herds in Riau and very rough estimates of their numbers, plus human and elephant deaths caused by conflict.
    • Forest Fires” includes fire hotspot locations in Riau.
  • To play with the information
    • enable or disable the buttons for the different GIS layers of information provided here,
    • slide your cursor over the maps to identify the users of the land underneath the cursor,
    • click when you have identified a land user you are interested in to get more information, or
    • click on the button next to the GIS layer you are using to view a database with all information on the land users identified here
    • click on to zoom in on specific areas.

      If you zoom in enough, you can check which company has been responsible for the conversion of forest since 1982, and which company has a license to convert some of the forests that still exist.
